This tour is a chocolate lovers paradise! If you have ever been curious about where chocolate comes from, look no further. This Fairtrade Chocolate Tour, called the Tour de Chocolate, is an opportunity for visitors to learn firsthand about how locals plant, harvest, process, and export cocoa to improve their quality of life. On this tour you will see the stunning landscape of the Dominican Republic and experience its welcoming and hard-working communities.
Visitors will learn how the hands of the women in the community transform the cocoa beans into wine, chocolate and marmalade…and will get to taste all of these delicious creations! If you thought the cocoa bean only produced chocolate, we invite you to taste the stunning variety of products our community has to offer.

Tour Package 1
The main objective of the Fairtrade Chocolate Tour is to make visitors familiar with the Fairtrade cocoa production process in the Dominican Republic. More than 8,500 small scale producers of “CONACADO” export their cocoa to markets in the U.S., Europe and Asia. Read More
How to Get There
By Taxi: take a taxi from the Hato Mayor bus station to the Conocado/Block 3 tour office on Hato Mayor-Vicentillo Road (km 1). From there, you will be led to the tour. Cost of taxi is USD$10.
By Car: from Santo Domingo or La Romana, take Hato Mayor Road to San Pedro de Macorís until the intersection with Vicentillo and at km 1, arrive at the Conacado/Block 3 tour office. The trip duration is approximately one and a half hours.
By Bus: take the minibus from the Enriquillo Park area in Santo Domingo, located between Duarte Ave and José Martí street. From there, go until Hato Mayor and at the Hato Mayor bus stop, take a taxi or a motorcycle taxi to the Conacado/Block 3 tour office. Once there you will be led to the tour. The bus cost is USD$7 per person. The motorcycle taxi cost is USD$1 per person.
Sustainability
The Tour de Chocolate is committed to improving the well-being of the local community through various initiatives: supporting English courses for community youth, improving road work within the cocoa communities, increasing the support of medical teams to benefit community members, funding a site for the association of women in Yabón, and contributing funds for the construction of a children’s playground in the community. The Tour de Chocolate is a social and community project, with 70% of the proceeds staying in the community to cover salaries and funding for the associations’ development projects.At the present time, the Tour de Chocolate is working on a project that will give both community and visitors an opportunity to plant trees in areas that have no forests. Community training workshops are being planned, which will cover issues such as solid waste management, conservation of water sources, and erosion reduction.
